The accused were alleged to have stolen and illegally disbursed about N4.9 billion Naira belonging to the Federal Government of Nigeria for political and personal uses. The defendants pleaded not guilty to all the charges preferred against them. Part of the charge reads: “That you, NENADI ESTHER USMAN, FEMI FANI-KAYODE, DANJUMA YUSUF and JOINTRUST DIMENTIONS NIGERIA LTD on or about the 8th day of January, 2015, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court conspired amongst yourselves to indirectly retain the sum of N1,500, 000,000.00 (One Billion, Five Hundred Million Naira) which sum you reasonably ought to have known form part of the proceeds of an unlawful act to wit: stealing, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 18(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012 and punishable under Section 15(3) & 4 of the same Act. ‘That you, NENADI ESTHER USMAN, DANJUMAN YUSUF AND JOINTRUST DIMENTIONS NIGERIA LTD on or about the 9th day of January, 2015, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court indirectly retained the sum of N300,000,000.00 (Three Hundred Million Naira ) which sum you reasonably ought to have known form part of the proceeds of an unlawful act to wit: corruption, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 15(2)(d) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012 and punishable under Section 15(3) & 4 of the same Act”.. However, counsel to accused: Fred Orbih (SAN), Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), and S. I. Ameh (SAN) for first. Second and third accused respectively, informed the court of their applications for bail. But Rotimi said he needed time to respond to the applications and urged the court to remand the defendants in prison custody pending the consideration of the bail applications. Justice Hassan ruled that, “since the prosecution was only served bail application yesterday, and in the interest of justice, it will be fair if the prosecution is given the opportunity to respond”. He, therefore, ordered that the defendants be remanded in prison custody and adjourned to Friday, July 1, 2016 for hearing of bail applications. http://dailypost.ng/2016/06/28/breaking-court-sends-fani-kayode-nenadi-usman-to-prison/ |

Fani-kayode And Nenadi Usman Sent To Prison By Court
Ekweremadu writes UN, US Congress, UK, EU, others; says Nigeria’s democracy in grave danger Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/06/ekweremadu-writes-un-us-congress-uk-eu-others-says-nigerias-democracy-grave-danger
BARELY 24 hours after the arraignment of Senate President, Bukola Saraki; his deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, and others for alleged forgery of 2015 Senate Standing Rules in an Abuja High Court, Ekweremadu has taken his case outside the shores of Nigeria. Ike Ekweremadu He called for intervention of the United Nations, Us Congress, United Kingdom, European Union Parliament and foreign missions, saying a powerful institution as the National Assembly was being ridiculed and rubbished by President Muhammadu Buhari’s government. But the Presidency in a swift reaction, said it would not bandy words with the Deputy Senate President. Also, the office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice said it would not comment on the matter since it was in court. Ekweremadu, who noted that the nation’s democracy was in grave danger, said their trial for forgery of Senate Standard Rules was an attempt to truncate Nigeria’s democracy and silence him as the leader and highest ranking member of the opposition party in the country. The letter In the two-page letter, entitled: “Re: Trumped Up Charges Against the Presiding Officers of the 8th Senate: Nigerian Democracy is in Grave Danger,” Ekweremadu, who attached copies of the court summons, and other relevant documents relating to the matter, is asking the international community to decide whether or not the trial was worth it, justifiable or one that was purely borne out of political vendetta. Ekweremadu noted that neither his name nor that of the President of the Senate featured either in the petition by aggrieved members of the Senate Unity Forum, SUF, or during the investigation of the petition by the police. The letter read: “You may further wish to judge for yourself whether this unfolding scenario, coupled with the clampdown on the opposition, such as targeted arrests and indefinite detention of opposition figures and dissenting voices, in spite of court pronouncements and in clear violation of the Nigerian constitution, as well as the sustained marginalization of the South-East and South-South geopolitical zones of Nigeria, does not constitute a grave danger to the nation’s hard-won democracy. “I wish to forward to you the court summons containing the trumped-up charges preferred against my person, the President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, CON; and two others. “I also wish to appeal to you to kindly find time to read through the annexures— petition by members of the Senate Unity Forum, statements by persons interrogated, and the police report— to see if our names appeared anywhere in these documents. Judge for yourself “You may, thereafter, judge for yourself whether the Federal Government, acting through the Attorney-General of the Federation, has any justification whatsoever to generate our names for trial. The list of the accused persons appears to have been politically generated because you cannot by the documents attached, relate any of our names to the offence for which we are now being charged. “Moreover, the rules and principles of fair-hearing have not been adhered to because the police have not interacted with me or the President of the Senate as at the time of writing this letter. “You may also wish to judge for yourself whether this trial orchestrated against me is not a political trial, calculated witch-hunt, barefaced intimidation, and a clear attempt to emasculate the parliament and silence me as the leader and highest ranking member of the opposition in Nigeria. “Meanwhile, it could also be recalled that an attempt was made on my life on November 17, 2015. The Nigerian security agencies did nothing, even though the incident was duly reported.’’ Witnessing against Saraki has nothing to do with my appointment —Ojudu Meanwile, Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, said, yesterday, that his role as a witness to the forgery case preferred against the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekwerenmadu, in court had nothing to do with his present appointment. Ojudu said he would testify as a member of the 7th Senate and the Unity Forum that called the police attention to the forgery, adding that his involvement in the case should be divorced from his current position. He said: “My statement and other witnesses’ statements were taken months before my appointment. As a member of the Unity Forum, I am one of those who worked for Senator Ahmed Lawan as the preferred candidate for the Senate Presidency in the June 9, 2015, election. “There are three groups of senators, namely: the Unity Forum, Like Minds and the Non-aligned. The Unity Forum comprises both serving and non-serving senators. I am an active member, being a senator in the 7th Senate from 2011 to 2015.” Ojudu said while he was in the Senate for four years, at no time were the rules amended. He added: “So tampering with the rules by the current Senate was seen as a misnomer by us and that was why we petitioned the police. “The statement we did to the police on the matter predated my appointment and that of Senator Ita Enang. It will, therefore, be preposterous for anyone to classify me as representing the Presidency on the matter.”

Sheriff Appoints Cairo Ojougboh As Deputy National chairman
FACTIONAL national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Ali Sheriff has appointed Cairo Ojougboh as the party’s acting deputy chairman to replace, Uche Secondus, who has since identified with the Ahmed Makarfi faction of the party.
Mr. Ojougboh is the immediate past national vice chairman, South-south of the PDP, but was one of the officials whose removal was announced at the last national convention held in Port Harcourt on May 21.
The letter announcing the appointment of Mr. Ojougboh, signed by Mr. Sheriff and his faction’s national secretary, Wale Oladipo, said “please be informed that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party in a meeting held on the 28th of June 2016, and having received nomination from the Concerned PDP stakeholders (Abuja Convention Group) and major stakeholders in the South-south has appointed you (Ojougboh) as the Acting Deputy National Chairman of the party pending the conduct of election to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of the erstwhile Deputy National Chairman. This appointment takes immediate effect.”
The letter urged Mr. Ojougboh to discharge the functions of his office with dedication to ensure the progress of the party.
Nigeria’s major opposition party has continued to move from one crisis to another since its National Convention in May.
Mr. Sheriff had announced the cancellation of the convention, citing court orders, but the other leaders of the party went ahead to hold the convention and announced Mr. Sheriff’s sack.
The convention also appointed a national caretaker committee with a former Kaduna state governor, Ahmed Makarfi as acting chairman and Ben Obi as National Secretary.
Mr. Sheriff insists he remains the chairman of the PDP.

Yahaya Bello Barred From Traveling Abroad, Ordered To Return Home - Kogi Reports
Security agents last weekend prevented Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello from boarding a Turkish airline flight for a planned trip to Saudi Arabia for lesser hajj.
It was gathered that when Bello went to the office of the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo to get clearance for his trip to Saudi Arabia, his request was turned down by the Vice President who advised him to go back to his state and settle workers unpaid salaries.
But he turned deaf ears to the vice president’s advice, and headed to the airport where he was prevented from traveling.
According to an airport source, security men stationed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja seized Bello’s traveling documents and told him they would not allow him to travel abroad unless they received clearance from the presidency.
The action of the men however, appears to be an instruction from the presidency.
The source said the governor had arrived the Abuja airport for the 11:10 a.m. Turkish Airlines flight to Turkey where he would have connected another flight to Saudi Arabia.
But after Bello had been checked in by the airline and was about to complete immigration formalities, his documents were confiscated by the Security men at the immigration cubicle where he was told that he could not travel.
“The security men were shown relevant traveling documents, by the governor, but the officers said they have no choice in the documents and that they weretion from above that they should not allow him to travel.”
The development caused confusion at the airport and delayed the Turkish Airline flight.
Bello’s luggage was however later unloaded to allow the flight proceed on its journey without the governor.
Recall that the Organized labor on Monday started a strike to compel the Kogi State Government to pay outstanding salaries owed to workers in the State as the governor threatened to invoke the “no work, no pay” rule.
Labor directed all workers to remain at home following the expiration of a 21-day ultimatum issued to the State government to pay all outstanding salaries and allowances.

Niger-Delta Avengers Invites Buhari To Niger-Delta
The Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), the new militant group in the Niger Delta region, wants President Muhammadu Buhari to visit the region to physically experience the pains of the community “in the hands of the Nigerian government and the multinationals”.
The invitation, which was delivered in a statement on Saturday, comes three weeks after the group warned the president to “sign his death warrant” before visiting Ogoniland.
“Buhari is trying to visit Ogoniland, but he should sign his death warrant before coming to Port Harcourt or try to visit any state of the Niger Delta community, Biafra land,” a suspected NDA member had told IBT.
“We are starting a dance he cannot finish. We shall dance like vultures. He [Buhari] has dared to wake a sleeping lion, but I promise him this time around if he tries to step his foot in any community of the Niger Delta, in Nairaland, he will not go back alive.
“Any Niger Deltan who will try to walk with Buhari shall also go to his grave that day. This is our assurance.”
Buhari eventually decided against the trip to Ogoniland, although the presidency did not state whether the avengers’ threat influenced the cancellation.
Saturday’s statement, signed by Moduch Agbinibo, was softer in tone.
“The Nigeria President Buhari should visit Ugborodo host to Chevron crude oil Export terminal/EGTL gas plant, Ogulagha host to Shell Forcados Crude Oil Export terminal/tank farm, Bonny Island host to Shell Bonny Crude Oil Export terminal/NLNG gas terminal, Brass host to Agip/ENI export terminal, Ibeno host to ExxonMobil Qua Iboe crude export terminal,” the statement read.
“These are just the export terminals not talking about the numerous oil and gas flow stations and the oil wells that crisscross the length and breadth of the Niger delta.
“Mr. President come and see for yourself what the host communities are going through in the hands of Nigeria government and the multinationals.

Mohammed Garba Gololo Sex Scandal: US Has 'Video' Of How He Grabbed Hotel Maid
U.S. has “solid evidence” of sex scandal against Nigerian lawmakers – Sources
June 24, 2016Ladi Olorunyomi
U.S. officials have “solid evidence” of the alleged misconduct Ambassador James Entwistle reported to House of Representatives Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, high-level diplomatic sources have told PREMIUM TIMES.
In a letter dated June 9, the U.S. Ambassador in Nigeria, Mr. Entwistle, accused three Nigerian lawmakers – Mohammed Garba Gololo (Bauchi APC), Samuel Ikon (Akwa Ibom PDP) and Mark Gbillah (Benue APC) – of soliciting sexual favours from hotel staff in two separate incidents.
Mr. Gololo allegedly grabbed a housekeeper in his hotel room and solicited her for sex while Messrs. Ikon and Gbilla allegedly requested hotel parking attendants to assist them to procure prostitutes.
The alleged incidents occurred in April at the Residence Inn Marriot, Downtown Cleveland and were promptly reported to State Department officials by the hotel’s management.
In response to the lawmakers’ denial of the allegations and threats of legal action, local sources in Cleveland and sources close to State Department and the Nigerian diaspora community in Washington DC have told PREMIUM TIMES that relevant U.S. officials are in possession of records specifying “circumstances of” the alleged incidents, including “eyewitness reports” and real-time “video” evidence.
“The Ambassador wouldn’t have written to the Speaker if there is no solid evidence,” said one of our sources, who added that after the hotel manager reported the incidents, State Department officers “had to investigate before acting on the allegations.”
The investigation was extensive and exhaustive; it included interrogation of relevant hotel staff and review of all closed-circuit cameras in the vicinity of the alleged incidents, state department insiders said.
Hinting at details of the investigation, our source countered Mr. Gololo’s denial, insisting that of the three lawmakers, “he is the one who actually put his hand on somebody, the others only made a verbal request”.
PREMIUM TIMES learnt from the state department that “the woman he (Gololo) allegedly accosted felt intimidated”. Local Cleveland sources told us that she feared she would lose her job if she screamed or caused discomfort to the hotel’s other guests.
She however reported the incident to her supervisor at the soonest opportunity after extricating herself from the offensive situation.
Our source equally brushed aside Mr. Gbilla’s protestations about not having a car as a diversion.
“You don’t need to have a car to talk to a parking lot attendant,” he said.
This newspaper was reliably informed by our Washington DC sources that Ambassador Entwistle would neither retract nor apologize for the contents of the letter sent to the Speaker.
“In all honesty, the Ambassador would not have gone forward with the letter if there is no solid evidence behind it,” he said adding that Mr. Entwistle “is not going to apologize; there is nothing to apologize for.”
Contrary to Mr. Gbillah’s assertion that Mr. Entwistle’s petition was an attempt “to bring disrepute to the hallowed institution of the National Assembly and the entire nation of Nigeria”, our source said the intention was to put out there that some participants in the International Visitor Leadership Programme (IVLP), not all, are guilty of bad behaviour and to educate participants who may be admitted for this and other programmes in future.
“The reality is that these three gentlemen made a mistake. They violated the terms of the IVLP of which they were duly informed before they left Abuja,” our source said.
“Prostitution is not legal in the U.S., they were informed about that before their departure,” the source said.
Our source insists that the lawmakers even had a chance to redeem their image after the fact.
“If they had been remorseful, if they had just said it was miscommunication and apologized, that would have been the end of it,” the source said.
Instead, the lawmakers over-reacted and made their case “sound worse than it is”, said our source.
“They were accused of assault and solicitation, no one talked about rape,” the source added.
PREMIUM TIMES has it on good authority that State Department officials are not worried about the lawmakers’ threat of legal action because, according to our Washington DC sources, “they know their evidence will hold up in court”.
“If they (Gololo, Ikon and Gbillah) want the full spotlight of the justice system to shine on the evidence in the possession of the State Department, they should go ahead and initiate a lawsuit,” the source said.
He also insisted that the lawmakers were accorded due respect even after hotel staff reported the incidents to their managers.
“Their conduct was a breach of U.S. law, instead of calling State Department officials, hotel managers could have had them summarily arrested and charged. As it is, everybody gave them a pass, letting them complete the programme without interference,” said the source.
The lawmakers’ alleged misconduct resonated negatively among Nigerian-Americans who are active in ongoing U.S. presidential election campaigns.
Those scheduled to be in Cleveland next month for the Republican Convention and allied political activities are weary that they may be victimized for the lawmakers’ bad behaviour.
Hotel management and staff may single them out for unsavoury treatment, they said.
“I won’t be surprised if they keep female service staff away from anyone who identifies as a Nigerian or carries Nigerian passport,” a Washington-based Nigerian said.
Nigerian Embassy in Washington DC has operated without an ambassador since the death of Professor Adebowale Adefuye last September.
When contacted, Gbara Awanen, Head of the Political Section, Embassy of Nigeria, Washington DC, said other than what he read in the Nigerian media, he knew nothing about the incident.
Other officials declined to comment for this story.

“As we speak all preparations and plans are on ground to strike and bring down the crude oil production to 0%, irrespective of the of the military presence in the region. The Federal Government will hear from us.”
The group in a statement by its leader, Commander Olomubini Kakarakokoro, a.k.a No Mercy, said that, “Except our demand for Niger Delta Republic is granted, without further notice to the Federal Government, we shall proceed to bomb Bonga field flow station, Asaba- Onistha Bridge, Third Mainland Bridge and other major bridges in the Southtern part of the country, just for a start.
“The Federal Government should as a matter of urgency, withdraw all the military check points from the riverside areas of the Niger Delta, else we shall proceed to match against any baby military formation in the region without further notice.

10 Lawmakers On US Trip Were Interrogated By State Dept Over Sex Scandal
The 10 lawmakers who attended International Visitors Leadership Programme in Cleveland, Ohio, United States, were interrogated by officials of the US State Department over allegations of sexual misconduct against three of their colleagues.
Hon. Mark Gbillah, Hon. Samuel Ikon and Hon. Garba Gololo were accused of soliciting for sex during the trip.
THISDAY gathered from reliable sources that the lawmakers were interrogated in April 2016 before they returned to Nigeria.
Some other lawmakers on the trip included the Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon. Jonathan Gaza Gbewfi; the Chairman of the Committee on Diaspora Affairs, Hon. Rita Orji; Hon. Ayo Omidiran, Hon. Nkole Ndukwe and Hon. Danburam Abubakar.
This therefore negates any claims by the lawmakers that the allegations were brought to their attention when they returned to Nigeria.
Reliable sources also told THISDAY that the State Department is in possession of more than just ‘verbal evidence’ against the three men.
The House spokesperson, Hon. Abdulrazak Namdas, however told THISDAY that he was not aware that lawmakers were interrogated while in the US.
US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, in a letter to Speaker Yakubu Dogara, had alleged that Gololo grabbed the housekeeper who was cleaning his hotel room and solicited for sex from her while Gbillah and Ikon allegedly asked hotel parking attendants to assist them to solicit prostitutes.
The accused lawmakers have denied the allegations and have threatened legal action to clear their names.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Committee on Ethics and Privileges, Hon. Ossai Nicholas Ossai, said the committee is still working to sort the modalities for the investigative hearing which would be public.
The committee, in collaboration with the Committee on Foreign Affairs, is saddled with the responsibility of investigating the allegations against Gololo, Gbillah and Ikon.
It is expected to liaise with the US Embassy in Abuja to examine any evidences against the men, that would buttress the allegations for which their visas have already been revoked.
Ossai said the committee had not made the decision on when to commence the hearing. Meanwhile the House has commenced on a two-week recess for the Ramadan. It would reconvene on July 12, 2016.

Update: Ekiti workers suspend strike ...sign agreement with govt
Civil servants in Ekiti State on Friday suspended their four-week-old strike following the signing of an agreement with the state government.
At a ceremony in Ado-Ekiti, the state government and the central labour unions agreed to a seven-point deal.
On the government side were the Secretary to the Government, Dr Mrs Modupe Alade, the Head of Service, Dr Gbenga Faseluka and the Chief of Staff, Chief Dipo Anisulowo.
On the side of the labour were the Chairman, Joint Negotiating Council, Comrade Oladipo Johnson, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ade Adesanmi and State Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Odunayo Adesoye.
Among the resolutions agreed to were that the state government should within seven days conclude its request with commercial banks to restructure personal loans granted public servants with a view to giving them relief from loan repayment; payment of January 2016 salary immediately and the payment of February salary as soon as Budget Support Fund is available.
Others were giving priority to government's obligations to public servants, payment of September 2014 salary of primary school teachers as well as Leave Bonus of local government employees.
The others were making N10 million available monthly to gradually defray outstanding gratuities, release the report of the 2015 staff verification exercise and making monthly provision for capacity building of public servants.
Speaking on the development, the Head of Service, Dr Gbenga Faseluka, expressed appreciation for the understanding shown by the labour leaders and the commitment of Governor Ayodele Fayose to ensure industrial harmony in the state.
He said the gap in the payment of salaries arose following the understanding between labour and government last September that the state's resources and statutory allocations were no longer adequate to pay salaries and there was need to merge two allocations to pay a month's salary.
"When you have such a situation on hand, it is obvious that when you get to 12 months, there would be a gap of six months. The arrangement started and we were combining two allocations to pay a month salary. The state government appreciates the workers and value their support and cooperation," he said.
The JNC Chairman, Comrade Oladipo Johnson, said the suspension of the strike would allow for further consultations and expressed thanks to workers for their support during the strike.

FG To Borrow To Pay N165bn Salaries Of Civil Servants - Adeosun
The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, Thursday, said the ministry cannot afford to pay the N1.2 billion requested by its workers, while she confirmed that the Federal Government was already borrowing funds to be able to pay the N165 billion a month needed to cover civil service salaries.
Adeosun, in a statement in Abuja, after the meeting held with protesting workers of the Ministry of Finance on Wednesday, said she does not have any power to pay N1.2 billion, which was not in the budget of the Ministry.
According to her, all government departments currently face a very real squeeze in finances as the country grapples with the financial crisis inherited from previous administrations, adding also that the collective priority, therefore, must be on working together to get the whole economy back on its feet.
She stated that the most important thing for management and staff was to get a common understanding of what the government needed to do to regain financial stability.
She said she intend to work with staff of the Finance Ministry to see how, together, those plans could be implemented as quickly as possible, thereby stimulating growth within a new diversified economy.
She expressed understanding for the Ministry of Finance staff who felt they should get additional bonuses, based on their past dealings with the previous administration, while she pointed out that many people across the country were struggling to find work or losing their
jobs, in addition to the fact that fellow civil servants in many states are not getting their salaries.

Aisha Buhari To Drag Fayose To Court If He Fails To Retract His Statements

Aisha Buhari In The US Different From Nigeria First Lady Aisha Buhari - SR
A SaharaReporters investigation into criminal activity in the United States by one Aisha Buhari confirms that the perpetrator is not the First Lady of Nigeria, Aisha Buhari.
SaharaReporters began its latest investigation following the circulation of reports that Mrs. Buhari—wife of President Muhammadu Buhari—was involved in a bribe scheme in 2002 in which she wired the sum of $170,000 to disgraced former US Congressman William Jefferson.
The current hysteria around allegations that Mrs. Buhari was involved in this fraudulent transaction as retaliation from the embattled Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, who had some of his Zenith bank accounts frozen by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Mr. Fayose, who is prone to public outbursts, has been at the center of several high-profile scandals including the Ekitigate scandal in which he faces allegations of using money from the Office of the National Security Adviser to rig the gubernatorial election in 2014. Following the freezing of his bank accounts earlier this week, Mr. Fayose resumed attacking President Buhari and his wife, accusing them of corruption. He has also reportedly been sponsoring fabricated stories connecting the First Lady Aisha Buhari to the William Jefferson scandal.
The genesis of the allegations linking the current First Lady with the $170,000 transaction has arisen from a sentencing memorandum concerning Mr. Jefferson, who was convicted of corruption in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. In the memorandum, “Aisha Buhari” appears once, on page 22, stating that the money was transferred to Mr. Jefferson from a Nigerian bank account in her name.
New York Times reporter Barry Meier published an elaborate report in 2007 titled “Teed Up: Golf, K Street and Nigeria” which prominently featured Mr. Jefferson, “Aisha Buhari,” and the former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Victor Attah.
Mr. Meier wrote at the time of “an unlikely cast of characters” seeking “a multimillion-dollar public spending spree initiated by Mr. Attah, an ambitious politician who wanted to be Nigeria’s next president.”
According to the account, middle-aged Aisha Buhari entered into the story when, by happenstance, she entered a non-descript Washington DC-based pharmacy and began chatting with a security guard. During that conversation, she allegedly told him that she was the daughter of the former military ruler, General Muhammadu Buhari. Following that conversation, the security guard later introduced Aisha Buhari to DC-based lobbyist Richard Hines.
The assembling of these personalities, more than ten years ago, laid the foundation for the criminal activity that followed.
SaharaReporters could not ascertain when or how the tale of Aisha Buhari evolved from a US-based woman claiming to be the daughter of former General Muhammadu Buhari to the Aisha Buhari, who is married to present-day President Buhari.
However, SaharaReporters investigation into the events around the illegal financial transactions involving an Aisha Buhari and any connection with the First Lady of Nigeria led our investigators to multiple sets of court records in Virginia courts.
SaharaReporters found no fewer than six legal cases involving an Aisha Buhari in the Fairfax County General District Court. The earliest date of these cases in the registry is October 19, 2012, with the most recent heard on March 31, 2016. Most of these cases involve debts or wage garnishment.
Also notable is that one case, which was heard on December 3, 2015, was appealed by a defendant named Aisha M. Buhari at a time that Nigeria First Lady Aisha Buhari was clearly in Nigeria. This is in addition to a pattern of alleged civil and criminal cases against an Aisha Buhari following the incidents reported by the New York Times in the mid-2000s—a time when now First Lady Aisha Buhari was living in Nigeria.
SaharaReporters investigation found that there is another Aisha Buhari, living in the Virginia area: the same Aisha Buhari who claimed to be President Buhari’s daughter but who actually has no relationship with him.
During the course of our investigation, we found that a property was sold on June 27, 2014 by Aisha Buhari to one Chiagozia Agbarakwe for $380,000. Evidence shows that that Aisha Buhari purchased the property in 2013 for the sum of $335,000, putting her in Fairfax County, Virginia, during that period.
In addition to court evidence, property records, and a list of known addresses belonging to an Aisha Buhari living in the United States, the New York Times in 2007 photographed the Aisha Buhari, who claimed to be the daughter of then General Muhammadu Buhari.
SaharaReporters has also obtained a copy of Aisha Buhari’s Nigerian International Passport, which shares the same profile as the photograph published in the New York Times, but she clearly looks nothing like the First Lady Aisha Buhari.
SaharaReporters contacted many of the aggrieved individuals who filed legal cases against Aisha Buhari, or their legal counsel, but none wanted to go on record due to the sensitive nature of their legal proceedings. Several of them did, however, confirm that Aisha Buhari was in the United States during the time her alleged activity took place.
